HCM: Healthcare Claims Management

HCM is a third-party company that primarily works with healthcare providers to help them with their revenue and billing cycles. As their intern, I was rotating through certain departments in the company to learn about how the company operates and what areas may need improvement.

Projects

During my time at HCM, I was involved with multiple projects as the company was going through significant changes due to new leadership and restructuring within the company.

Physical Representation of HCM's Organizational Chart

Since the company was going through a lot of leadership changes at the time, I was tasked with helping the CEO and Director of Human Resources visually see how big the company was and where they could potentially move people around

Timely Filing Deadlines

Involved working with the Revenue Cycle team to help them compile a list of when claims should be submitted and adjusted to insurance companies.

Uploading Documents to Paycor

HCM was switching their payroll system from Insperity to Paycor and trying to bring everything in house. Paycor is an HR system commonly used by healthcare companies. Employees can clock in and out, see their reviews, etc.

Internship Presentation

Check out my final presentation to see all of the projects I was part of, details about the project I enjoyed the most, and recommendations for the future of HCM's internship program!

Learning Objectives

1. Improve my networking skills

Due to changes within the company, my internship program changed from being completely remote to a hybrid schedule. I would work from home 2 days and be in the office 1 day out of the week. The 1 day I would be in the office was up to me and did not have to be the same day. Being in the office allowed me to meet a lot of upper management that I would not have been able to meet through projects or in meetings. Changing the days that I would go in the office allowed me to meet new people every day and learn about their roles, how they got into the industry, etc.

2. Strengthen Excel Skills

At HCM, they are heavy on data analysis as they collect large amounts of data from their clients. I was able to be with the data analysis team for 2 weeks where I learned how they take data from their clients and put it through a cleaner in Salesforce that will then extract the information that they need to easily interpret it in Excel. After they convert the data into an Excel Spreadsheet, they can then take the data and build dashboards as well as charts in Tableau. HCM does this to most of their client data so that they can report the information and help their clients improve on collections, patient financial engagement, etc.

3. Learn more about healthcare regulations

Because HCM was going through a lot of restructuring, I was not able to learn about the healthcare regulations that they had to be more aware of compared to other healthcare organizations. Although I did not learn about healthcare regulations, I was able to learn about new policies HCM was trying to implement as they have a new HR Director (e.g., what to do if an employee's performance is down, what happens when an employee is not clocking in on time, etc.).
